When I decided to sell my house, I thought it looked great. Every room had its own personality. A deep green dining room, a bright blue guest room, an accent wall here, wallpaper there. I loved it because it felt like me.
Then my Realtor walked in and said the words I absolutely did not want to hear:
“You need to paint.”
Not touch up paint. Not one room. The whole house.
I honestly thought she was being dramatic. I remember thinking, Why should I repaint perfectly good walls just because buyers don’t like color?
But… she was right.
Here’s the thing I didn’t understand at the time: when you sell your home, it stops being about your style and starts being about helping buyers picture themselves living there.
Every bold color choice I loved became a distraction to buyers. Instead of noticing the high ceilings, natural light, or beautiful floors, they were mentally calculating how much work it would take to repaint.
Fresh neutral paint completely changed the house.
Suddenly the rooms felt bigger, brighter, cleaner, and more expensive. The house photographed better online, showed better in person, and created that “move-in ready” feeling buyers want.
And yes… it sold faster.
One of the hardest parts of selling a home is separating emotionally from the space you created. But sometimes the advice that stings a little is the advice that makes you the most money.
So if your Realtor tells you to repaint the purple bedroom or tone down the bright red accent wall… don’t take it personally.
We’re not saying your style is bad.
We’re saying we want buyers to fall in love with your home the second they walk in the door.
